August Nature Happenings


• Orioles and grosbeaks are migrating south for winter; most are gone by end of month
• Hummingbird activity remains strong as migraters join our year-round birds
• Nectar bats begin appearing at hummingbird feeders late at night

• Earliest fall songbird migrants arrive - have seed available for them
• White-winged doves leaving the area for winter at the end of the month
• Grasses are greening up in response to summer rains and begin producing seeds
• Gila monsters finishing up their summer breeding season
• House Finches with young still coming to feeders
• Male tarantulas on the move, looking for females with which to mate
• Mockingbirds, Orioles, Phainopepla and others taking advantage of ripening desert hackberries
• Summer butterflies are out in droves this month
