December Nature Happenings

  • Winter Solstice - the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. It's the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter.
  • Feeder activity increases as weather cools and rains arrive.
  • Phainopeplas are numerous - feasting on ripe mistletoe berries.
  • Watch for an increasing number of juncos on the ground beneath your seed feeders.
  • Provide a blend with enough white millet like our No-Mess Blend or Deluxe Blend to satisfy the increase in ground feeding birds like towhees and juncos.
  • Anna's hummingbirds begin looking for mates.
  • Watch for flocks of Cedar Waxwings
  • Continue enjoying hummingbirds at your feeders.
  • Anna's Broad-billed and Costa's hummingbirds are very common in winter.
  • Cactus Wren pairs are maintaining multiple nests for roosting.
